Librarian to Librarian Networking Summit 2012

  • Joining forces to support students: School librarians and counselors teaming for success (Dotson-Blake, K. P., Mangum, L., Dotson, K. B.)
    • This roundtable will provide participants with an opportunity to discuss strategies for collaboration between school counselors and school librarians. School librarians are well-positioned to serve as leaders of collaborative efforts within school settings. By reaching out to the school counselor, school librarians can implement innovative initiatives to increase circulation and expand the positive impact of the library's resources. The facilitators have experience implementing and evaluating school librarian and counselor collaborative efforts and will offer examples of strategies that have proven successful. Additionally, facilitators will encourage discussion of strategies that would be appropriate in the participants' settings. Best practices and current research will be discussed and challenges will be explored.

  • Innovative leaders in partnerships media coordinators & guidance counselors: Promoting library resources & student mental health with online resources (Mangum, L., Dotson-Blake, K. P., & Dotson, K. B.)
    • Abstract: In this demonstration we will show how the librarian and counselors at one high school collaborated using technology to meet curriculum requirements and address mental health concerns. Documents shared will include the outline of project, data collected showing impact and the collaboratively created web sites and resources.

    • Abstract: High school students are experiencing critical mental health concerns which impact career and college-readiness. This presentation shares how counselors and the librarian at one high school collaborated to use technology to meet standard course of study requirements and address mental health concerns. Implications for career development will also be explored.

  • Providing Core Courses Online in the Small Rural School: Collaborative Roles and Responsibilities (Dotson-Blake, K. P. & Dotson, K.)
    • Abstract: How can small rural high schools counteract deterrents to achievement that students facein today’s economic crisis? With increasing staffing cuts it is time to embrace alternative educational formats, particularly in the distance learning and online arena. Core subject area courses are readily available online. Content of these courses follow designated curriculum guidelines designed by teachers within their professional disciplines. Community colleges also are eager to offer credit for courses successfully pursued online. School librarians and school counselors have a pivotal role to play in redesigning access to and delivery of education to the high school student through an online approach. Thus, this presentation will present practical suggestions for school counselors and school librarians for the collaborative development and delivery of online courses in the high school setting. These suggestions will be linked to the critical process of career planning for high school students.
